UGV-II angekündigt

← Zurück zum Forum

. Hallo Leute

Hier übrigens alle drei derzeit vorhandenen UGV Varianten:

Hi,

Mytek made a very cool interface, which I successfully recreated and I must say that I haven't been so pleasantly surprised for a long time :-)

In the meantime I decided to make an SMD version in a slightly different configuration.. namely I replaced the PIC microcontroller with a cheap RISC-V and added a function used in FideoFixer to latch the generated pixels. As a result, a UGV-II-FF hybrid was created. I built two copies and tested them in Atari 65XE and 800XL. For me it's a revelation. The image generated by UGV is amazing and using an S-VIDEO to HDMI converter we have a great replica on modern TVs :-)

You can read about it in the thread: https://forums.atariage.com/topic/332717-still-working-on-gtia-v-gate/page/10/

Additionally, I have also designed a version for the 600XL and as soon as I confirm that it works, I will publish all the materials.

This is also a very interesting solution. But the nice thing about the UGV-II from Mytec is that it is very easy for people with little soldering experience to assemble themselves.

Thank you for your interest.

I usually order PCBs from JLCPCB - cheap, fast and very good quality. So in my opinion is best option. I encourage you to assemble it yourself, but if you don't feel up to doing it yourself, I can assemble a few. I can also send it in bulk to avoid multiple shipping costs. The estimated cost of a self-made module does not exceed 20 Euro,

One remark about the VG (Video Gate) idea itself. In my opinion it is not very useful because cutting off the sides of the screen in many cases spoils the effect of demos and games. If you do not need this functionality do not install CH32V003 ... It will be a bit cheaper and less work :-)

Hi UGV2 Freaks :-)

I built and tested UGV2-FF v2.6 with very good results. Changes from 2.1 to 2.6 are:

  • values of resistors were changed to fit better luminance gradient,
  • MOSFETs were dropped and replaced by quick smidth's buffers (saved some PCB area),
  • LED diode was dropped,
  • added SELECT feature to ON/OFF VGATE during Atari normal working mode (5 seconds push then release to change VG mode) - very usable if you are VGATE user!
  • VG jumper still use for default VGATE mode.

Result is amazing!

You may get KiCAD files/GERBERS/SOFTWARE from my page.

If you want to build/have your own UGV2-FF - please let me know.

Nope, v2.6 is really good tested and working perfectly. Version 2.9 has added optional capacitor on Fout line (you may add it if needed) and i decided to change footprint for 74LVC1G07 to bigger one.

  • The two capacitors C1 and C9 are shown polarized on the circuit diagram. Can I also use simple unpolarized MLCC capacitors or do they have to be tantalum capacitors? I have not found any electrolytic capacitors with a 1210 footprint.

. Sorry for my many questions, I hope you don't mind too much. But I'm very interested in your project and when I build the board, I want to be sure that I'm doing everything right and that I understand what I'm building.

The R8 originally was set to 27ohm by Mytek but after some tests we decided to set it to 0ohm because of video signal level - maybe it was good for NTSC , I don;t know but for PAL system it's better in order to have full voltage level. I decided to leave this resistor's pads because somebody want to tweak video level, so if you want, you may use wire instead 0Ohm resistor.

You may use non-polarized capacitors. I'm using 1210 size 47uF. I tested UGV2 with 10uF capacitors - it's working good as well... on the beginning I used tantalum 1210 polarized capacitors but... these are not cheap and easy to damage e.g. because of overheating, so I changed these to standard MLCC.

There are no stupid questions... I made nine versions of UGV2 because I don't know everything when I start to build it :-), so don't be hesitate if you have ANY question.

JoSch schrieb: Would these v2.9 boards better fit into 800s?

It's doesn't matter. from v2.3 ... v2.6 i added cut off left top corner to fit Atari 600XL (mechanical conflict with Delay Line as I remember) all of these are okay for Atari 800XL. The difference between v2.6 and v2.9 is only cut off left edge which was in conflict with other extension into Atari 1200XL and a few not important mechanical changes (not influence to video quality).

You can program an SMD component with this type of adapter outside the PCB on a breadboard before soldering the SMD IC to the PCB. You therefore do not need the programming connection on the circuit board. https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07DK2TNYV/ref=sspa_dk_detail_4

Hi,

I'm sorry... What you means blue screen? Is it screen on your TV/monitor when you have no signal? Check clock on FOUT/74HCT175 pin 9 - shall be ~7MHz or 14MHz - depend on ICS501 S1&S0 configuration. Have you oscilloscope? Check signal on 1 pin of FMS6400 - it's VIDEO with SYNC. I know that it's not easy to check signals because all pins are covered by GTIA - sometimes you need to use additional wires but you have all data do investigate what is going on.

Please don't tell that it's not working.. I made 20 pieces and had trouble with 2 first pieces - because of lack of connection on pin or two not soldered. I told - it's not easy to assembly it according to size and need little more experience...

I may help if any issue appeared but can't help if you talking only: "it doesn't work". Need more data. I'm available directly on Signal if you want to get help.

During assembly I've one accident with 47u capacitor: after 2 minutes under load it has short circuit on power - probably was degraded during soldering process. I can imagine it's probably possible frequently.

I know - you have good experience and knowledge with electronics but this is a problem of first piece - I've the same - spend 3 hours looking for issue.

It seems that I have a different revision of the board. It is also version 2.6 but on your photo I can't see the capacitor C8 22p. In the schematic you write the component is optional. But should it be assembled or not?

Since I have not yet programmed a CH32V003, I wanted to start without this component to be on the safe side and do without VGate. I had already asked and that shouldn't be the problem.

As you have already said, it is very difficult to measure a piggyback circuit board. I soldered a test board for the UGV so that the GTIA is next to the piggyback board. I have to check whether this also works with your board. My test adapter looks a bit wild, but it works. Maybe someone who is good with KiCAD could provide such a board as a Gerber. 😉

I'll do it when find a while :-)

Normally, I soldered thin wires directly to pads and connect to oscilloscope's probes. But it's good idea to have dev-board like you shown for futures projects and modifications :-)

It's not necessary in most situation. I described it in detail on my website. You need to use 22p if you see "floating pixels".

Yes, CH32V003 is only for VGATE feature: UGV2-FF-2.6-sch.png

. That could be the problem:

Screenshot 2025-03-09 113446.png I have only leave out U3 but installed U5. This is then permanently set to Hi via R1. I don't think that should be the case.

So I'll desolder U5 again and then let's see ...

Just give HIGH on input.. will be good :-)

. It seems that the problem was that i had a bad connection on R1! But I also desoldered U5 to be on the safe side and voilà:

The problem is that the distance between the solder pads for 805 is too small when soldering by hand with a soldering iron. However, you have already written that 603 is easier.

I mounted the rest of the resistors with a hot plate and solder paste. There were no more problems.

. My next steps:

Take a closer look at the image with various test programs.

When I'm satisfied with the quality, I'll have to install the software to program the little microprocessor. I've never done that before, so I might need some help, we'll see.

Once I have programmed the processor I can then test the VGate function.

I know that you recommended the CH32FUN software for programming the CH32V003. But I don't want to program anything myself, I just want to flash the chip. So I thought that I could simply use the original WCH-Link utility?

I have installed everything and can access the LinkE programmer and also read out the CH32V003. I can also read the firmware “UGV7Mhz.bin”. But there are a lot of parameters to set. Can you help me here?

Also etwas Geduld. Ich melde mich dann.

Thank you! Great idea with the ZIF40 socket.

I will definitely order the test boards as soon as you have released the Gerber for the 2.9(.1).
